The University of Tulsa’s athletic training program combines academic courses with practical experience to prepare students to prevent, evaluate, treat and rehabilitate musculoskeletal and athletic injuries and illnesses. Athletic trainers practice in a variety of settings, providing prevention, treatment, diagnosis and rehabilitation to active individuals across the lifespan. While most athletic trainers practice in an athletic setting (e.g., high school, college, professional teams), others use their knowledge and skills in sports medicine clinics, hospitals, industrial/occupational clinics, the military, performing arts and many more.
Program overview
Students in the Accelerated Exercise and Sports Science to Master of Athletic Training (ExSS-MAT) program gain experience under the direct supervision of faculty and professional staff who are Board of Certification (BOC) certified and Oklahoma-licensed athletic trainers.
These experiences take place in a variety of settings, including (as part of the supervised practice)
- Division I athletics at TU,
- orthopedic clinics,
- high schools,
- occupational/industrial settings,
- professional sports teams and
- special events.
Graduates of the ExSS-MAT program will be eligible to sit for the BOC exam if BOC application requirements have been met.
Program features
The ExSS-MAT program is designed to prepare students to enter the profession of athletic training. The program requires five years of study, with the first three years spent as an ExSS student and application to the professional (MAT) phase happening in the student’s junior year.
The professional phase comprises didactic and supervised practice credits. The final supervised practice is designed for students to obtain an internship opportunity anywhere in the United States (or abroad, where applicable). The courses build on the knowledge gained in undergraduate education, while providing practical supervised practice, which is crucial to success in the program.
Instructional preparation with extensive human–patient simulation and skills laboratory time is combined with supervised practice experience in a variety of settings. Early in the program, faculty arrange clinical placements to ensure the best learning opportunities; later in the program, clinical placements are student-led with emphasis on their career goals.
